Parc Taf Bargoed Hosts Universities Canoe Championship 2009 - 28 Apr 2009

PARC TAF BARGOED HOSTS UNIVERSTIES CANOE POLO COMPETITION 2009

For the last ten years Cardiff University have organised the Universities Canoe Polo competition, with previous competitions being hosted by Atlantic College and Cardiff Bay. As a team from the University had played at a Welsh League event at Parc Taf Bargoed during the summer of 2008, they were so impressed with the facility they requested Aberfan Canoe Club to organise their 2009 event on the lake.

The event is open to any university and this year a total of 18 teams entered representing universities from Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, Liverpool, London, Bangor and Nottingham.

The teams were split into two divisions of nine based upon their National League Ranking.

As teams were travelling from all over the country they required accommodation and this was provided by Treharris Mini and Junior Rugby club allowing their training pitch to be used as a campsite. Teams started to arrive at the campsite on the afternoon of Friday 27 February in readiness for the games start at 9.00am on the Saturday.

Aberfan Canoe Club set up three pitches on the lake on Friday night, two for the games and a floating pitch for training.

Games started on schedule at 9.00 am and ran continuously throughout the day, finishing at 5.00pm when all paddlers went for a welcoming shower at the rugby club. Fortunately the weather was fine and reasonably mild so any capsized paddlers did not suffer too badly. During the evening the students attended a disco with bar provided by the rugby club so there were some sore heads on the Sunday morning, when again games started at 9.00am.

The finals were held on Sunday afternoon where Division 1 was won by Cardiff University Old Boys and Division 2 by Cardiff University B.

Many thanks to Paul and Ian the Park Wardens for all they are help over the course of the weekend and to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council for use of the facilities. Everyone who attended the event, which included over 120 paddlers and supporters had an enjoyable weekend and couldn’t say enough of the warm welcome, how good the venue and facilities were, and how they looking forward to coming back again.
