Wales win the Rivers International Fly Fishing Championship - 24 Jul 2009
Anglers from around the UK arrived in Merthyr Tydfil during June 2009 for an event that highlighted the ‘environmental transformation’ of the Heads of the Valleys area.
The Rivers International Fly Fishing Championship 2009 took place at various locations on the River Taff and was the first time this prestigious event had come to the south Wales valleys. It follows substantial investment for environmental improvement - including a £500,000 fish pass in Merthyr Tydfil for salmon and trout, largely financed by the Welsh Assembly Government.
Members from the four participating home countries arrived in Merthyr Tydfil on Tuesday 23 June for several practice days prior to the competition on Friday 26 June. The competition is held annually on a rotation basis across each home country.
Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association chairman Gary Davies said, "Being able to hold this event in Merthyr Tydfil was a great honour and the Welsh team are delighted to have won this years competition. Years ago it was impossible to fish below the Morlais Brook, yet today you can fish the Taff right down into Cardiff Bay.
"South East Wales has a wealth of rivers, reservoirs and lakes which offer different fishing experiences within a variety of stunning locations, and the River Taff was an ideal setting for this year’s event."
The Heads of the Valleys initiative is a 15 year regeneration project, led by the Welsh Assembly Government, working to benefit communities in Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Aimed at stimulating regeneration, economic growth, and environmental improvement, the £140 million programme is making the Heads of the Valleys an increasingly successful and attractive area for people to live and work.
The Rivers International event has been locally supported by the Angling Association, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, Heads of the Valleys Initiative and the Communities First initiative.
