Arts in Merthyr Tydfil
The vibrancy of the Arts in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough can be seen through a series of annual festivals including Global Village - Celebrating diversity in Merthyr Tydfil, Merthyr Music Festival at the Myfanwy Theatre in Merthyr College, Bedroc - a Welsh language music festival, major local authority events including the Merthyr Show, Treats on The Streets and performances at Cyfarthfa Park (Status Quo in 2008 and Donny Osmond in 2007).
There are a number of local community providers and art societies who run workshops and performances. Local pubs and clubs provide the opportunity to experience live music from popular local bands including Celtic Pride, Diamond Dogs and One Hot Puppet together with many others. Local promoters organise regular live shows by the latest touring bands, offering a platform for some of the brightest stars of the future, including Merthyr’s The Blackout (who toured Europe with American rock giants Linkin Park in 2008) and Midusuno (The subject of the book "Dail M For Merthyr" by award winning author Rachel Trezise) both of whom started out on the local scene.
Open Mike Poetry Nights at the Imperial Hotel also offer the opportunity to hear nationally recognised and award winning authors, including National Poet of Wales, Gillian Clarke, Patrick Jones, Rachel Trezise and Merthyr’s Mike Jenkins and Des Barry, both of whom also appear in the new Merthyr anthology "Merthyr Writing!" which will be published on 24th October 2008.
