About The Spread the Word Literature Festival

The Spread the Word Children's Literature and Arts Festival – now the biggest event in the UK celebrating World Book Day!

The Festival is designed to inspire young people to read and write with this year’s theme being "Shakespeare: past, present and future". The Festival will feature prominent children’s authors, musical acts, a science area and planetarium.

It’s on Thursday April 23rd 2020 from 9am until 3pm with over 4,500 children in Merthyr Tydfil, across 19 locations taking part in over 200 workshops.

There’s lots of fun to be had on Penderyn Square where you’ll find a Make and Take Tent, Bouncy Castles, Climbing Wall, Book Shop, Fairground rides and life size Dinosaurs roaming around. Add to this over 70 stalls selling delicacies such as Welsh jams, local cheeses and chocolate.

At 9.30am a parade of over 1,500 children will proceed through the town dressed to represent “Shakespeare: past, present and future”.

The event launches in St David’s Church, Merthyr Tydfil at 9.30am for the official opening by Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales.

The event, hosted by the Stephens and George Charitable Trust, is in its seventh Year.
