Stunning Views

Merthyr is surrounded by amazing scenery including Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain. Capture these spectacular scenes on a landscape photography workshop with Nigel Forster Photography.

Spend a day outdoors with Merthyr Ramblers who’ll share their local knowledge on weekly walks, or simply enjoy the panoramas while playing 18 holes at Merthyr Tydil Golf Club or Morlais Castle Golf Club. Another amazing viewpoint is the Giant’s Bite - a dramatic gap in the skyline at the site of a former quarry, visible from the A470. Reach it via the Giant’s Bite circular walk.

Get a different perspective by taking to the water in a canoe on Pontsticill reservoir. Explore for a few hours or take camping kit with you for an overnight expedition, and watch the sunrise. Parkwood Outdoors Dolygaer will supply all the equipment and knowledge you need for a great day out.

Wildlife Spotting

You’ll see abundant flora and fauna on the 5-mile circular riverside walk in the Taf Fechan nature reserve in a wooded valley, starting near Cyfarthfa Castle. Each season brings something new: wildflowers, birds, insects, butterflies, autumn colours, fungi.

Follow the circular Red Kite Trail and you’re likely to see these amazing birds overhead. There are three routes, ranging from 1.7 to 4.5 miles, all starting from the Rock UK Summit Centre which has a lovely café.
