Merthyr Tydfil Set to Celebrate Biggest World Book Day Festival in the UK!

The Stephens and George Charitable Trust is thrilled to present a very special part of the Merthyr Tydfil Arts and Literature Festival—an enchanting celebration just for early years children and families, taking place in Penderyn Square and The Castle Hotel on Thursday, May 1st, 2025.

From the moment little ones step into the square, they’ll be transported into a world of colour, creativity, and imagination with live performances, storybook characters, interactive play, and hands-on fun that brings the magic of books to life.

This early years area is lovingly designed to spark joy and curiosity in children aged 0–7, with activities that engage the senses and inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Highlights include:

•    Live performances by Looby Loo – full of laughter, singing, and playful fun

•    Guest authors and illustrators hosting Storytime and doodle sessions

•    A colourful soft play zone for safe, exploratory play

•    Creative Make & Take craft stations – take home your very own festival creations

•    Majestic dragon puppets and playful daffodil and BFG stilt walkers

•    Appearances from beloved characters like James and the Giant Peach, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and favourites from classic storybooks

•    Whimsical dancers, bouncy castles, and traditional fairground rides

•    A charming life on a farm story time with Slade Farm

•    Falconry displays that let children get up close to magnificent birds

•    Magical storytelling tents with cosy corners and animated tales

It’s all happening in the heart of Merthyr at Penderyn Square and The Castle Hotel, transformed into a storybook wonderland filled with fun, friendship, and imagination. Whether your little ones love dragons, animals, crafts, or cuddles with their favourite characters, there’s something magical for everyone.

This dedicated early years experience is part of the UK’s largest World Book Day celebration, which brings over 4,000 children together across Merthyr Tydfil for a day of unforgettable moments, powered by the love of books and the joy of learning.
