Gethin Woodlands & Webbers Pond

Discover Gethin Woodlands & Webbers Pond

Gethin woodlands covers 850 breathtaking hectares and it’s where you’ll find Bike Park Wales.

The Merthyr Tydfil section is part of a much larger woodland area covering 1,364 hectares between Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare and where you’ll find Webbers Pond. Testament to the woodlands striking location is that it was once used to film an episode of Doctor Who amongst other things.

There are 21 waymarked footpaths and 14 bridleways within the woodlands to explore.  Whether you are on foot, horseback, cycling or taking the dog for a walk there’s plenty to enjoy. With around 21k of tracks, the natural peace of a woodland visit and stunning valleys views right out to the Brecon Beacons, it’s no wonder that it’s so popular with locals, families and visitors alike.

Breathe deeply taking in the sights and sounds of this exquisite woodland setting or try tree hugging. It’ll boost your physical and mental wellbeing.

Please note that some trails cross paths with Bike Park Wales cycle tracks.

Webber’s Pond

On the outskirts of Gethin Woodland Park lies the reserve of Webber's Pond. Webbers Pond is owned and managed by the Merthyr Tydfil & District Naturalists Society.

During Spring and Summer, the pond teems with life - dragonflies, amphibians and wildflowers are in abundance. Bird watchers can see warblers, finches, woodpeckers and kingfishers.  In winter, redpoll and siskin can be seen in the area.

Child friendly dipping platforms and fishing areas make the area great for a day out for the family, and parking can be accessed nearby by following the turning for Gethin from the A470 in Merthyr Tydfil.

The woodland is managed by the Forestry Commission who strive to protect the under threat rhos pasture (rough and marshy grassland).

This area was once part of Gethin Colliery which was owned by the Cyfarthfa Iron Company.  The pond was built to provide water to the Gethin Pit No 2 with its own pond.
