Heads of the Valleys Cycle Network – Sustrans Route 46

The Heads of the Valleys Cycle Network forms the backbone of Sustrans Route 46, a scenic and historically rich cycling route that connects Glynneath in South Wales to Bromsgrove in Worcestershire. At its heart lies the Heads of the Valleys section, a spectacular stretch between Brynmawr and Merthyr Tydfil, offering panoramic views, industrial heritage, and access to the natural beauty of the Brecon Beacons.

The Heads of the Valleys Section
This central portion of Route 46 winds through the South Wales Valleys, following quiet roads and traffic-free paths. Cyclists are treated to sweeping views, historic canal paths, and remnants of the region’s coal and iron industries.

The route links with other trails including the Taff Trail, Neath Canal, and spurs to Pontsticill Reservoir, Penderyn Distillery, and Pontneddfechan Waterfalls, making it a perfect base for exploring the wider region.
